Project Offers
IBG works in several ways to stimulate students themselves to create, develop and maintain relevant contacts with work-life. One part of this effort is to help you as a student to find suitable projects for research internships, degree projects, PhD positions, etc. In the project database we publish project offers from academia, corporations and government agencies. We sometimes also announce different career promoting events of a more general nature. The sub page "Want to know more?" below also has permanent links to external resources that may be valuable to help find additional projects, etc.
View all the present projects further down the page!
Some projects are described in English; others in Swedish. The current offers are listed below. Older, archived offers can be found via the link on the right.
We are supported by the Kjell and Märta Beijer Foundation and collaborate in various ways with the Beijer Laboratories in Uppsala; with its three subsections: Beijer Laboratory for Gene and Neuro Research, Beijer Laboratory for Drug Discovery and Beijer Laboratory for Animal Science.
Support and collaboration applies also to EIT Health, an extensive EU spanning network aimed at technology, innovation and entrepreneurship within different parts of the health sector, as well as at active ageing. EIT Health at Uppsala university continually arrange various courses and events of interest to you as a student, but they are also able to lend support if you have specific innovative ideas that you want to substantiate and develop.

Designing a more efficient CO2-fixing enzyme, BMC
Nature’s CO2-fixing enzyme (Rubisco) has a slow catalytic rate and exhibits poor substrate specificity such that its catalysis often limits the growth rate of photosynthetic organisms, including crop plants and cyanobacteria used for biofuel production. Attempts to engineer a more efficient Rubisco have been underwhelming, at best. Here you will interpret brand new Molecular Dynamics (MD) data and use it to design a more efficient CO2-fixing enzyme. Discuss with the PI whether this, for your purpose, will be suitable to do in the form of a master degree project or possibly as an internship/research training!

Improving Protein A based purification of mAb´s/IgG1, KTH
The standard purification method in large scale production of antibodies is Protein A affinity chromatography. A previously engineered variant of Protein A (ZCa) that binds IgG in a calcium-dependent manner and releases when calcium is removed needs some improvements of the molecule also with regard to elution pH. This project will consist of selections against IgG1 using a previously prepared phage display library to find binders that can elute IgG1 in a calcium-dependent manner at pH 7 and subsequent characterizations of the binders. If successful, the new molecule could be a radical improvement for Protein A-based IgG1 purification.

How is Rubisco built "in real life"?, BMC
Rubisco (ribulose-1,5-carboxylase/oxygenase) is the major entrypoint for carbon into the biosphere. It is built up of a large complex of 8 large subunits (LSu), encoded by a single plastid gene, and 8 small subunits (SSu), encoded by a nuclear multigene family. Although Rubisco has been extensively studied it is still not known whether different SSu isoforms can bind the same L8 core, and what the functional significance of potential differential SSu expression for Rubisco assembly might be. Here you may take part in helping shed light on this fundamental issue, in the form of a master degree project or internship/research training!

Degree project in structural molecular biology, BMC
191023: This degree project place is filled and no longer open to apply for!
If you join this project you will study a peroxide sensor which reacts to peroxide when it has iron bound to it, but which can also bind manganese. The iron- and manganese-bound forms regulate different genes. The project aims to establish the molecular basis for this intriguing dual function. The specific goals of the project are to optimize the purification procedure for the protein, then characterize its structure and its metal-dependent DNA binding activity. To achieve this you will have to learn and use a plethora of biochemical and biophysical methods, useful also in other contexts of course.Structural molecular biology of a peroxide sensor

Internship/research training on antibiotics as environmental pollutants, EBC
The main question to be answered within this project relates to the adverse effects that excessive amounts of antibiotics in the environment may have: do environmental anthropogenic antibiotics affect the intestinal microbiota of aquatic animals, e.g. freshwater crayfish, and thereby their susceptibility to different diseases? The factors driving the high risk of extinction among organisms in freshwater ecosystems are diverse and in great need of further scrutiny.

PhD position in crop production adaptations to climate change, SLU Uppsala
Extreme weather conditions, such as those that hit Northern Europe in summer 2018, are expected to become more common with climate change. They threaten food security by reducing crop yields and increasing their year-to-year variability. We thus need to know how we should grow our crops to reduce risks of weather-induced yield losses. To this aim, the PhD-student is expected to collate and analyze long-term meteorological and yield data drawn from differently managed cropping systems, to identify the most promising cropping strategies and their applicability by farmers.
